Clare’s Law (formally known as the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme) provides members of the public the right to ask the police if their partner, or the partner of a loved one, has a history of domestic abuse. It is named after Clare Wood who was murdered by her former partner in 2009. Her family were shocked to discover the perpetrator had a history of violence against women, and her father campaigned for a law change. This was implemented on International Women’s Day in 2014.
Anyone who wishes to make an application for a disclosure under Clare’s Law can call the police on 101 or visit their local police station. Information will usually only be given to the person who is potentially at risk.
