Aylesbury Women’s Aid was set up in 1986 by a small group of women who wanted to provide help to women experiencing abuse by their partners. View our history timeline.
ABOUT US
We are a friendly, committed team offering outreach support (IDVA and case workers), counselling, and group programmes from our office in Aylesbury that clients can visit.
TEACHING SELF HELP
We work from a feminist perspective and are guided by the principle of self-help, encouraging women to determine their own futures.
We offer refuge accommodation for survivors and their children from areas outside of Aylesbury.
Our 5 Principles
The services are based on five principles:
- The abused woman is of central importance.
- The need to empower women and enable them to regain control. Women’s Aid services are provided by women and for women.
- The value of the mutual support of other women who have similar experience.
- A commitment to caring for the emotional, developmental and educational needs of children affected by domestic violence.
- An open-door policy.
All women who would like to use the services are welcome, regardless of those with or without children, age, class, ethnic origin, disability, sexuality, nationality, religion or cultural beliefs.
Our relationship to Women’s Aid Federation (England)
Aylesbury Women’s Aid is affiliated to the Women’s Aid Federation (England) which was established for the benefit of abused women and their children mindful of the fact that domestic violence is a result of the general position of women in society. We have attained the Women’s Aid national quality standard, recognising the provision of high-quality specialist domestic violence support services.
